As a result of stronger emissions rules, Volkswagen is rolling out a new manual transmission for the 2020 Passat called the MQ281. It's supposed to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 5 grams/km, depending on the engine choice, and a torque spectrum between 200 and 340 Nm (147lb-ft and 250lb-ft).
“With the MQ281, we have developed a highly efficient manual gearbox that reliably meets these demands – and is soon to be introduced into a number of vehicle classes in the volume segment,” said in a statement Helmut Göbbels, Volkswagen head of manual gearbox.
I'm glad to see that VW is sticking with manuals, especially in the wake of their emissions scandal. I'll be very interested to see what the reviews are on it.
