Modified Jetta to attempt speed class-record

Volkswagen will be attempting to break the class record of 335km/h in their new specially tuned Bonneville car. They have significantly modified the car both inside and out, housing a tuned version of the EA888 engine from the Golf R400 concept which makes 395hp. It also has a lowered suspension, fully enclosed wheels and a limited slip differential. The majority of the interior has been striped to lighten vehicle weight and accommodate the roll cage, racing seats, harnesses and fire suppression systems. We'll get to see just how capable the upcoming GLI will be, when this annual speed week kicks off in August.

There aren't many stock components left on this GTI are there. Though I'm happy to see VW testing out mods/tunes on the Jetta. With that kind of power under the hood, it'll be interesting to see what sort of top speed its capable of.

Also shows the compatibility of engines between different VW models. Although I don't know if there would be much interest in a production Jetta, with Golf R levels of performance.

Its no longer a Jetta, when road cars are modified as extensive as this is, its a vehicle of its own. However I have to add its a great marketing tool for one of VW's most desirable products

This kind of powertrain will never find itself into a production Jetta, as that would not only deter sales from the Golf R, but it would also increase the MSRP substantially. I think one of the main selling points for this new model is how aggressively its been priced against rivals in base trim.

Definitely not and the same goes for other leagues and challenges car makers put special versions of its production cars through, what impacts the consumer end is marketing. To what extent it does that is questionable. Odds are though its cheaper and far more measurable than traditional forms of marketing.

Its fairly similar to strategy we've seen Toyota take by putting the Supra into Nascar. It doesn't look anything like what the production model will, but it'll still get the name out of TV, and give people the chance to see the capability of the platform.

It looks like due to some unforeseen circumstances that VW had to call off this land speed record attempt. There was some kind of transmission issue and instead of trying to work around the clock to fix it, they decided that they will hold off and try again in September.
